In 1948 the Michigan Association of Visiting Teachers embarked on its mission to build a bridge to success for all students, especially those who “had personality difficulties…and adverse home conditions.” Since then school social workers have become an integral part of the team of professionals who are called on to assess, evaluate and provide clinical interventions to students to improve school readiness and success. Our clinical training, assessment capabilities and knowledge of community resources equip us with the tools to address the needs of the Whole Child. As we look to the future, we will continue to provide much-needed support for students on their journeys to success, self- sufficiency, self-confidence. Let us all renew our commitment to empowering them to become the bridges to the next generation.
