ONE MORE THING!!!! Since the second half of our presentation is an interactive one that includes the sharing of assessment resources, we need you to bring 8 copies of your own favored assessment tool(s) that you use for any disability category. These could include but not limited to: psychosocial histories, observations, checklists, scales, etc. In your small group, you will talk about the population it serves, copyright information, ordering information, strengths, limitations of use and so on. Using language from an RTI model, we will focus on assessment tools that would be used at a Tier 3 level—INTENSIVE. (See article BELOW for further information on RTI interventions and assessments).

Hope to see you next week Friday. This will be a wonderful opportunity for us to get together and share our assessment tools and ideas with one another.

NEWS

Region M had three professional development meetings this school year, which provided our group an opportunity to earn six continuing education hours towards licensure.

On September 18th, Steve Whitmore presented, Incorporating Educational Standards into your Social Work Practice; November 6th, Kimber Bishop-Yanke presented, Stop the Meanness, Spread the Kindness; and on January 15th was An Overview on Childhood Mental Illness and New Advances in Pediatric OCD. All of these professional meetings were well attended and received positive feedback.

Our region is now accepting nominations for the Region M 2010 School Social Worker of the Year.

We will have our annual Social Work Month celebration on Friday March 12th where we will honor the school social worker chosen this year. Our region will also hold an Idea Fair that day. This will provide an opportunity for school social workers to share ideas and resources with one another. Plans for this are being finalized!

Region M was sad to say goodbye to the MISD’s MASSW secretarial support person, Carolyn Feddersen. Carolyn has been a tremendous support to our organization for many years. She was instrumental in setting up our MISD web page, www.misd.net/ssw, a place where our region is able to maintain current information/resources for Macomb school social workers. She will be missed!

Region M celebrated School Social Workers in March at our quarterly meeting at the Macomb Intermediate School District.   Macomb County School Social Workers were guests of the MISD at a luncheon it hosted in their honor. Members received a handheld “stress ball” from region M as their social work gift. stevewhitmore.gifOur Region M School Social Worker of the Year also was announced at the luncheon March 12th.  Steven Whitmore from Utica Community Schools was selected and will represent Region M at the MASSW State Conference at Crystal Mountain in the fall. Steven also serves as the webmaster for the MASSW’s excellent website.

A CE opportunity was provided at the meeting as well. Tom Koepke from the MISD provided us with an introduction and tour of the new TIEnet system. Steve Whitmore and Anne Marie Timpf facilitated an Idea Fair and exchange of Assessment Tools for School Social Workers. MASSW merchandise, including shirts, jackets and tote bags, also were sold at the meeting.
